Album Review: Tokyo Police Club - Smith [EP]

Though it’s been out since February as a digital EP, Tokyo Police Club’s Smith EP will be officially released on November 6. The EP includes a fourth song that did not originally appear on the digital-only release - an RAC remix of “Be Good”.

The EP also includes three songs that can still be considered technically new: “Box”, “Cut Cut Paste”, and “A Lesson in Crime”. These three songs exemplify Tokyo Police Club’s obvious desire to achieve a more mature and diverse sound. The lyrics are just as witty and catchy as before, but the sound is more unique and experimental. Though the highlight of the EP is “Cut Cut Paste”, the slow and melodic “A Lesson in Crime” perfectly exhibits the potential of the band. They aren’t just a fast-paced, three chord Indie rock band anymore.

After recently signing a record contract with Saddle Creek, the Canadian natives are expected to release their debut LP sometime in early 2008. If this EP is a true indication of the direction their sound is taking, the LP should probably be a good one. I just hope it has some new material besides what we have heard from their first two EPs.
