Listen: The Maccabees
I know I’m not revealing anything most “hip” music people don’t already know, but I can’t stop listening to a certain British indie band. The Maccabees are a mixture of sounds we have heard before. Their debut album Colour It In, which came out earlier this year, features a music style that has clearly taken a page from the likes of Blur, Weezer, Futureheads, The Hives, The Strokes, and everything in between. And thats probably only scratching the surface.

For this reason, it seems that people either really like the Brighthon, England natives or express nothing but contempt toward them. Their music has been deemed both exhilarating and fun, unoriginal and lacking direction. But for me, I just see/hear a fun band that makes catchy music. Sure, I’ve heard it before and they aren’t releasing any ground breaking material. But I still give The Maccabees credit. Songs like “Precious Times”, “X-Ray”, and “First Love” bring a smile to my face every time I give them a listen. And they did try to branch out their sound with the acoustic melodic ballad “Toothpaste Kisses”.
The only thing I’m not that fond of is at times I feel like the voice of front man Orlando Weeks begins to sound too similar to the down right annoying voices of John Mayer and Jack Johnson. But this only occurs during a few phrases in a song or two. Colour It In so I’ll let it slide.
Give them a shot. If you like them, well that’s great. If not, well you have 1/2 of the music community behind you so don’t feel too bad.
