The Fairmount Park Conservancy, the non-profit fundraising and promotion arm of the Fairmount Park system, today announced that it has proposed a multi-day, multi-stage outdoor concert festival for Summer 2008, to the Fairmount Park Commission. According to the proposal, C3 Presents of Austin, Texas, will produce and promote the festival. C3 produces the Lollapalooza festival in Chicago and Austin City Limits in Austin, which are similar in size and scope.
Under the terms of the proposal, the festival will be held over a three day period during Summer 2008, on Belmont Plateau in Fairmount Park. C3 will pay for all expenses incurred by the City of Philadelphia for city services such as a police presence and trash pick-up, which could be upwards of $1 million according to city officials. The production company will also cover all costs associated with the restoration of Belmont Plateau following the festival. Additionally, C3 will contribute $500,000 or 7.5% of gross ticket sales, whichever is greater, to the Fairmount Park Conservancy.
The proposal will be voted on November 14, but it looks this has a pretty good chance of occurring. It will certainly be interesting to watch this whole thing unfold. For example, when will this take place? My best guess would be in July so as not to steal the thunder of other festivals…
