Album Review: Daft Punk - Alive 2007
It’s a tad hard to review a live album from a musical phenomenon such as Daft Punk. After all, before even listening to Alive 2007, I knew what to expect - hodpodge live mix of songs that attempt to exemplify a live Daft Punk concert - a difficult task for sure. I was expecting no surprises, no disappointments, just an experimental mix of beats and sounds. And in the end, it’s an accurate representation of, at least the sound, that can be heard at a Daft Punk performance.
The duo of Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter mostly mix and mash different beats and melodies of their 10+ year collection of songs throughout the 12 tracks. “Too Long” appears in three different places, while parts of “Crescendolls” are performed twice. The album features mostly recent work from 2005’s Human After All though all the musical attributes and styles of the group’s illustrious career can be heard at least one bass heavy beat.
Perhaps Alive 2007’s biggest highlight is it’s last track - a mix of “Superheroes”, “Human After All”, and “Rock’n Roll,” three of the band’s most successful and commercial friendly songs. The mix exemplifies the immense talents of Daft Punk in such a way that not even the most casual of music fans can’t help but nod their head or dare I say…dance? Other highlights include mixes of “One More Time” and “Aerodynamic” and “Touch It” and “Technologic”.
But even while presenting the musical talents of the group, this live album fails to truly depict an accurate representation of a Daft Punk concert. And as a CD, how could it? A Daft Punk show is unique in so many ways. The light show, the dancing, the feeling of the beating bass underneath your feet, and the music are all elements that when combined allow for a once in a lifetime show. And the only way of truly experiencing it, is to actually attend physically attend a Daft Punk show.
