2007’s Top 50 Albums: #34 - Release the Stars

#34 - Rufus Wainwright - Release the Stars

Critics of Rufus Wainwright’s 2007 release of Release the Stars cited the album lacked emotion and intimacy as it felt more like a Broadway play or an opera rather than the typical norm sensuality that has come to define his music. I truly don’t understand where this sentiment comes from after listening to songs like the politically charged “Going to a Town” and the brutally honest, yet cynical “Between the Legs”. The lyrics and the passion of Wainwright are still certainly present, even if Release the Stars puts a greater emphasis on musicality. And because of this combination, it certainly makes for a very solid album.
