#31 - M.I.A. - Kala
M.I.A. is truly not of this planet. Like her debut album Arular, her 2007 release entitled Kala is a flurry of noise. There is no absence of her norm fierce beats, diverse drum loops, and colorful sounds - all together creating some of the most unique music around. M.I.A. again incorporates the sounds of an variety of different cultures into Kala. There’s everything from Indian rhythms and beats to the usage of The Clash’s “Straight to Hell” in the song “Paper Plans,” and this again is what helps separate the album apart from the growing popularity of alternative dance music. In fact, I’ve read a few reviews that compare the intensity and direction of Kala as somewhat similar to both early Clash sound and the diversity of their latter album Sandinista. I would certainly agree with this point and it certainly goes to show that the influence of Joe Strummer and company is never a bad thing.
