2007’s Top 50 Albums: #21 - Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer?
#21 - Of Montreal - Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer?

In may aspects, Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer? is the most unique and confusing album of 2007. After dealing with some rather turbulent time, Of Montreal frontman Kevin Barnes made this album his emotional self-narrative. The first half of the album is full of upbeat, melodic pop songs similar to the tracks of the band’s previous two albums. But the dark, mystical 12-minute appropriately named “The Past Is A Grotesque Animal” serves as the album’s turning point, which then descends into more experimental and deeper sound. It’s almost as if Barnes wrote the first half of the album sober and the second half, well…high out of his mind on some sort of drug, a state that is chronicled in much of the album’s lyrics. Perhaps it would be best to say, the album is just as complex and conflicted as it’s creator. But, it’s not like I’m complaining…
