2007’s Top 50 Albums: #22 - We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank

#22 - Modest Mouse - We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank

Sure, We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank, the fifth studio album of Modest Mouse, is more mainstream appealing than all of their past works. There’s less quirkiness, less inaudible screaming from frontman Issac Brock. But that doesn’t mean the album lacks the band’s unique sound. Modest Mouse is probably the only band that can make music sound so catchy and frantic at the same time as the furious guitar rifts, the fantastical vocals of Brock, always seem to somehow mesh. The addition of former Smiths’ guitarist Johnny Marr also has an easily heard impact on the band’s overall musicality, which allows Modest Mouse to be even better than they were before - something that certainly seems far-fetched.
