Besides the fact I have a Christmas countdown on my computer and decorations seem to illuminating Manhattan like it’s the North Pole, I didn’t truly realize the lovely little holiday is so close until I saw Okkervil River’s spirit of giving.

The Austin, Texas natives have released a somewhat themed free Christmas EP via their website. Golden Opportunities features one original song, “Listening to Otis Redding at Home During Christmas,” plus eight additional covers. Among them are covers of Joni Mitchell’s “The Blonde in the Bleachers” and Randy Newman’s “Simon Smith and the Amazing Dancing Bear”.

Unfortunately at this time, it appears the site has experienced a bit too bit many hits. And after a few listens, I can certainly see the reason for all the hoopla. But thanks to the glory that is Pitchfork, you now can again download it.
