R.I.P. Joe Strummer
Just five short years ago today, Joe Strummer, the legendary frontman of The Clash, passed away at the age of 50 as a result of an undiagnosed congenital heart defect. Strummer was more than a musician, he was the voice for the oppressed and impaired. He understood the value of music and the bea
uty of words. He was also perhaps the most intense musician you’d ever find. In other words, he was the ultimate frontman.
In memory of one of the most important and influential music icons in the 20th century, I thought I’d post some of my favorite memories of Joe.
Though “London Calling” is obviously one of The Clash’s more notable songs, it’s music video exemplifies the many characteristics of Strummer. From the passion and intensity on stage to the profoundness of his words. He truly believed in what he was singing.
And who could forget his cover of “Redemption Song,” a tribute to his good friend Bob Marley. As I read one person put it, the song was Joe’s epitaph, his final word. Though he did not know of his fate, he left us with us with a song that truly defined his manner and beliefs. He left us with one last protest song, one left message of change.
The overall impact and influence of Strummer is truly immeasurable. It’s no wonder he had the likes of Costello, Springsteen, and Grohl covering his song shortly after his death in perhaps one of the greatest tributes ever.
I strongly encourage anyone interested in learning more about him to see The Future is Unwriten or read Redemption Song: The Ballad of Joe Strummer. Strummernews.com also has a wonderful tribute page.
On a personal note, Joe Strummer is probably my largest musical influence. Though I wasn’t alive during his heyday, nor did I ever have the opportunity to see him live, Strummer is without a doubt my biggest hero. He stood for so much, fought for so many people, and created such unbelievable music. As I’ve said so many times before, he was more than a musician, he was a spokesman for an entire movement. And we could really use someone like him in today’s world. I hope everyone can take at least a second to turn on one of his songs and just listen to his voice, his words, and his energy.

Wow! Thank you for making this. I have a tribute to Joe but it honestly seems like no one else gave a shit about this wonderful voice. Glad to see there are still some people keeping his memory alive.
