Modest Mouse, The National to open for R.E.M.
Matt Berninger, frontman of the National, has revealed to Australia’s Triple J some inside information on who will be opening for R.E.M. on their upcoming tour.

“I don’t know if we’re allowed to say but I think we might be doing some shows with them when their new record comes out. So that’ll be unbelievable for us. I think Modest Mouse are also going to be part of those shows too.”

Looks like those will be some unbelievable shows. R.E.M. releases Accelerate on April 1.
The band has yet to announce 2008 tour dates, but they are currently confirmed for Langerado and SXSW. The National have sporadic dates scheduled through May. Modest Mouse are currently laying low.
Berringer’s favorite song ever is R.E.M.’s “Fall on Me”. He has also recently talked about the issue of lyrics in relation to R.E.M.:
Lyrics need to be good, but they don’t need to be obvious right away. The Smiths and R.E.M. and Guided By Voices are bands that, when you first hear a song, the lyrics don’t always make much sense at all, and often they never do, even much later.
