Radiohead, Feist, others on Later…
BBC music program Later… with Jools Holland celebrated it’s 200 episode last night with a slew of high profile music guests.
Radiohead, Feist, Cat Power, and Mary J. Blige all the took some time to perform on the anniversary episode of the influential U.K. show.
Feist - “My Moon, My Man”
Watching from the studio audience, you feel tension in the air.As each act chips in a song, it’s like a dignified form of combat, as if musical prize-fighters are slugging it out in the ring for primacy.
For this anniversary edition, the gladiatorial stakes couldn’t be higher, as two of the biggest-selling artists in the world are ranged, face-to-face, barely 10 yards from each other. In the red corner: representing America, womanhood and black R&B’s irrepressibly carnal thrust, Mary J Blige. In the blue corner: white Britain’s titans of blokey avant-rock speculation, Radiohead.
Underlying the whole ethos of Later…, however, is a belief in music as a continuum, where there are no winners, losers or boundaries of nation or genre, just an eternal bond between players and listeners.
Mary J. Blige - “I Feel Like a Woman”
Mary J. Blige - “Just Fine”
Radiohead - “15 Step”
Radiohead - “Weird Fishes/Arpeggi”
Radiohead - “Bodysnatchers”
Radiohead - “House of Cards”
