Listen: Broken Records
It’s getting to the point, where there are just too many talent, young bands in Europe these days and it’s beginning to get quite hard to keep up. Fortunately for Scottish natives Broken Records, they shouldn’t have too much trouble catching the ears of music critics. After just a small sample from their debut s/t EP, I’m already hooked.

With a Ra Ra Riot meets Okkervil River-esque sound and passionate energy reminiscent of Arcade Fire, the seven piece band is a tad bit different than most of the music coming from over the pond as of late. Absent are the catchy guitar rifts and bass heavy drum beats that have come to define bands like The Fratellis, The Wombats, Arctic Monkeys, and everything else in between. While by no means discrediting these immensely talented bands, Broken Records offer a pleasant diversity.
Instead, melodic violin, piano, and mandolin parts make up most of Broken Records’ sound, which is complemented nicely by frontman Jamie Sutherland’s folkish, Springsteen meets Win Butler with a Celtic twang like vocals. Their sound is clean, yet epic, full of the lively, excited passion expected from a young band. Each of their songs is it’s own particular journey of discovery, dissecting a variety of themes from death and war to heartbreak and despair.
Broken Records, who though already extremely talented, are a band overfilling with even more potential. Their sound will likely will grow fuller, their lyrics more personal and real. They’re only going to get better - a scary thought…and something I personally can’t wait to hear.
