The Grammys: The Day After Yesterday
I was indeed one of those “schmucks” who sat through the entire three and a half hours that
made up the 50th Annual Grammy Awards last night waiting for that rumored Michael Jackson appearance.
While it certainly had its moments (ie. Daft Punk and Feist), there were also a number of times when I just wanted to cover my eyes and ears..
Welcome to Consequence of Sound’s Grammy recap. If you were one of the fortunate who found a better way to spend the night, or are one of those folks, who for whatever reason, want to relive last night, this post is for you…
Daft Punk played the Grammys…Or wait, did they?
We posted the video last night of Daft Punk’s appearance with Kayne West. But was that actually the electronic duo? After all, they weren’t using their normal equipment. I’m willing to bet it was them, but we may never know…
Kanye West was emotional, but also pissed.
Aside from his collaboration with Daft Punk, Mr. West gave a rather emotional tribute to his now deceased mother. It was easily the most “real” moment of the night.
But in the end, Kanye didn’t win…the award for “Best Album”. And it didn’t seem to help that Vince Gill ripped into him earlier that night.
Foo Fighters played, Jason Bateman was smug.
Foo Figthers took the stage, accompanied for whatever reason by John Paul Jones and a full orchestra, to perform “The Pretender.”
Jason Bateman, who MCed the whole Foo Fighters’ shindig, seemed a tad bit annoyed with his role…However, he did make the effort to deliver the line of the night, “John Paul Jones is here. And for all you idiots who don’t know, he is in Led Zeppelin.”
Amy Winehouse was sober?
Amy Winehouse, despite the fact that she is a drug addict and not allowed in the United States, was last night’s big winner. She won five Grammys, including “Record of the Year” and “Best New Artist.” She also preformed…
And had a rather strange reaction upon winning…
Alicia Keys raised Frank Sinatra from the dead!?!?!
Um yea.
Tina Turner preformed with Beyoncé
And I had no idea Turner is 69 years old. Wow.
Will.i.Am. offers most confusing song ever…
But then again, he essentially showed everyone how they wasted the last three+ hours of their lives.
I still don’t know who Rihanna is…
But I do know now how good The Time are at dancing.
Nas makes a statement.
The Grammys proved they still aren’t good at handing out awards
In the end, a drug addict who still hasn’t given us any reason why we should feel sorry for her, was the night’s big winners. Herbie Hancock? won “Album of the Year”! But then again, it’s not like the Foo Fighters deserved to win, oh wait…they did anyway. They beat out Springsteen and Wilco for “Rock Album of the Year”.
If anything, the Grammy Awards once again showed its irrelevance. It’s out of touch with both what is popular, and more importantly, with what music is actually good. Face it, how many people actually knew Herbie Hancock had an album nominated before last night? But then again, it’s not as if he had any real competition. Foo Fighters? Amy Winehouse? They should have just given it to Kanye, but that would have been too easy.
And the Grammys and the music industry as a whole are still wondering why people aren’t listening? Maybe it’s because only in there minds does Dave Grohl’s perhaps most sub-par work to date, still deserve to win and even be heard over the likes of Springsteen and Wilco…

I enjoy Amy’s mini-show and I love her CD…
She’s really an idol here in Europe.
they should of kept playing music over kanyes speech……he needs to either stay behind the scenes as a producer or go back to the streets and learn how to make a rap flow, not just rhyme
I wouldn’t call Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace the Foo Fighters’ worst release. I’d give that to One by One, at the very least. I think the album really showcases the band at it’s moment and some songs are stripped down and gorgeous (e.g. “Stranger Things Have Happened”, “Come Alive”, and “But, Honestly”) The only crime here is that the album won over Springsteen’s Magic, which is one of his best and relevant release yet (this coming from a major fan of The Rising).
I think it’s weak the Grammy’s even gave an award to Amy Winehouse. I don’t really find her all that talented. She’s a hypocrite and unnaturally sadistic for the music industry. Her antics are borderline asinine and given her music, she’s a horrible role model and representation of the female performance.
Now, I’m glad they awarded Herbie Hancock. The guy actually plays music and his genre is so under represented. I’m happy.
And Wilco? Why they were even nominated for their most sub par release is beyond me. Sky Blue Sky has maybe three or four songs worthy of the band’s back catalog.
The White Stripes win is bogus, too.
But then again, who really takes this shit seriously to begin with? I’m with you buddy when I was waiting anxiously for MJ!
my bad on the spelling.
So in 50 years its Amy Winehouses CD that will be rebemered as the best (blanked on the name of the CD). Are you kidding me Its Radioheads In Rainbows. Amy’s CD was really good no doubt about it but there was two or three CDs better than it. (In Rainbows, Boxer (The National), and MIA Kala. Oh and I am a fan of Kayne West’s CDs just not him. Hes kinda a dousche.
I don’t deny Winehouse’s talents. But I don’t think the album, nor her behavior are worthy of a Grammy award.
There were much better candidates out there…
Well, if they stuck with the popular choices, then it wouldn’t be the Grammies. It’d be the American Music Awards.
As for Amy Winehouse, her song deserved to win…even if her CD didn’t. Give her brownie points for managing to stay off the bottle and crackpipe. Success can be truly a bitch to deal with…especially with a husband in jail.
Vince Gill was right to take a little shot at Kanye West. I just can’t stand such ego as what West has. This is not a guy who is so fabulously fantastic, although he feels he is. He’s an embarrassment. Why did he have to wear such ridiculous sunglasses? He really thinks he’s the world’s greatest, and he’s not even close. He leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Berry Gordy’s old stable of talent make mincemeat of this guy.
Forget about Amy Winehouse and her drugs when you write about her talent. She’s a huge talent, so unusual, so distinct. I’d watch her over West any day of the week.
