The Police arrest Costello

In what is both good news and bad news for fans of The Police, the official website announced some details that are endearing and pressing. Let’s hit the goods first, though. For one, the band is going on another, third leg through America. However, instead of the usual opener Fiction Plane, Sting & Co. is bringing Elvis Costello w/ The Imposters along for the ride.

Once you’ve calmed down a bit, let me bum you out some.

The bad news, unfortunately, is that this will be the last ride for The Police. Yes, yes, I know. All of those new tour shirts, posters, and pins will now all be for nostalgic purposes only.

What will he do when it’s all over, and The Police are finally put to bed?”Go home to Italy and write,” he replied. He and wife, Trudie Styler, and their extended family of six kids live in a magnificent villa near Florence where Sting has written, rehearsed and recorded for many years. It’s where he composed his best-selling classical album, “Songs from the Labyrinth,” for example, three years ago.”I think it’s done,” said the multi-tasking singer/songwriter/activist/actor. “People came to see something from the past, and it was great.”

While upsetting and uneventful (another Sting solo release? Really?), The Police have some great plans for 2008, including DVD releases, updated set lists, and some other goodies.

Dates are announced tomorrow, but there are hints already (e.g. Buffalo, Columbus, Chicago, Kansas City, Omaha, Orlando) and word of a final date set for August 4 at Jone’s Beach in Long Island, NY. Personally, I think it’s a fitting time to finish off something. The end of summer is depressing enough, so what better time to break up a highly influential band, right? I’m so there. For those pessimists that need some reassurance the band’s still “got it”, then check out an unbelievable performance in Rio de Janeiro last December, bootlegged for you, of course:
