AC/DC, Alanis and The Vines in the studio
What a crackpot line up of artists we have here this early in the morning, huh? Over the weekend, there were several updates reporting that each of these artists have tricks up their sleeves for the near future. Two are from Australia, though one in particular is a little more surprising than the other. In fact, the last time these rockers had an album, I was starting high school. Okay, enough reminiscing. Let’s do this alphabetically, shall we?
In what’s been almost a decade in the making, AC/DC, is finally due to follow up 2000’s ultra successful Stiff Upper Lip, which would make this particular entry their sixteenth studio album. It’s been a long, quiet stretch for the Aussies who once took us to Hell and back, but they’re purportedly holed up with some studio time and in all places, Canada.
According to a BW&BK source, Aussie hard rock legends AC/DC landed in Vancouver, BC last night (March 1st) to commence work on their anxiously-awaited new album. The band’s last album, 2000’s Stiff Upper Lip, was recorded at The Warehouse Studio in Vancouver, BC with George Young (Angus and Malcolm Young’s older brother) and engineered/mixed by Mike Fraser (METALLICA, AEROSMITH, VAN HALEN) - perhaps the team set to work on the band’s new material?
While not exactly the confirmation we’d want to see, it’s still something. The least these guys could do is tour some. It’s not like Angus Young is going to look any better in those short shorts year after year.
Though I haven’t seen her since my last visit to Starbucks, this Canadian singer, who managed to rock out about relationships with Uncle Joey, is back on a louder than acoustic release. Flavors of Untanglement is the latest collection of songs from Alanis Morissette, who spilled some details to Rolling Stone.
While Flavors maintains some of So-Called’s buoyant sound, according to Morissette, “There’s a nice cross-section on this one. There’s so much joy and levity … and then there’s kind of rock bottom, ‘Holy shit, I am a broken woman’ moment.” Morissette tapped Guy Sigsworth (the former Frou Frou member who’s worked with Seal, Björk and Madonna) as a co-writer, with hopes of expanding her sound. “I think there’s more technological aspects to it on a sonic level than ever before,” Morissette tells Rolling Stone. “I love to dance so there’s a lot of loops and beats on this record where you can dance your face off.”
If she’s working with the same guy who put out Seal’s material, then I’m all in. To think, I was just humming the melody of “Crazy.” Considering Morissette is still in the studio, expect Flavors of Untanglement sometime late this year.
The other Australian natives, The Vines, are back in the studio to follow up 2006’s widely ignored third album, Vision Valley. Though to side with the band, it doesn’t help that their lead singer is diagnosed with Asperger’s disease. Here’s what they’ve been up to.
Nicholls has been focusing with his band on their fourth disc, helmed by Evolved producer Rob Schnapf. “Nothing can hold us back now,” says Nicholls. “Unless I die in a plane crash.” The fourteen new cuts include the string-laden “True as the Night” and the heavy-pop tune “Merry Go Round.” Says Nicholls of the Vines’ return, “We’re coming back, and it’s gonna be madness.”
What’s surprising is that the band is making an appearance at the SXSW Festival, despite being out of the spotlight for over a year. I guess we’ll find out how they do pretty soon, considering it’s this weekend.
