Oberst plays with Springsteen

While we were all galvanized by the spectacle that was SXSW over the weekend, Conor Oberst took some time to play with his friend Bruce Springsteen. The creative genius behind Bright Eyes made a surprise appearance during the encore of Springsteen’s Omaha, Nebraska show.

In the encore — another seven-song special that really made the night — Springsteen brought the “hometown boy” for “Thunder Road,” saying “He’s a great singer with a great band.” Oberst spent the beginning of the song kneeling at the front of the stage; he began singing with “Roll down the window and let the wind blow back your hair,” and he and Springsteen shared the rest of the song. “Vote for change this time, maybe…” Bruce added with a chuckle.

Unfortunately, it apparently wasn’t their best collaboration. The Daily Record stated that Oberst looked intoxicated and stumbled through most of the song.

Springsteen and Oberst performed together during the 2004 Vote for Change tour. The Bright Eyes frontman also will be collaborating with Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder on an anti-war compilation in the coming months.

We’ll post a video if and when it pops up…

  1. Thank you for the link to my story. As a point of clarification, I never said (or implied) that Oberst looked intoxicated. I wrote that Oberst “was woefully unprepared to keep up with The Boss. Oberst nervously paced in circles around guitarist Little Steven Van Zandt, and flubbed most of his lines. ”
I chalk it up to nerves, not alcohol.
    Thanks again for the link.

  2. Hmm…

Well, I think it’s safe to say he wasn’t sober. I think NJ.com implied it…

    Anyway, thanks for stopping by.
