Sound Tribe Sector 9 and the studio dilemma
Nearly three years since their last studio album, Artifact, live dance tune guru’s Sound Tribe Sector Nine, is finally offering their fans a new album.
Due out this July and titled, Peaceblaster, the band is supposedly promising to bring that same raw live intensity to these never before heard studio tracks. Sector 9 has also stated that a tour will follow the album release, which of course is something to look forward to.
However, being a fan of the Tribe for a few years now, I have to ask myself, “How could they ever match a live performance to a studio track?” In fact, ever since my ass fell into the STS9 pool, I have never been a big fan of their studio songs. To me, the studio songs are just recorded bits that they build their incredible live songs into; the foundation if you will. The band has been, and will always be, about the live shows. Without the accessories of spectacular light effects and the giant family and friends that comprise the Sector 9 kids, their music is just like a blank CD.
Okay, I’ll admit, this discussion has come up before. Studio albums are important to the bands. It’s the same reason I don’t listen to much studio releases by the Dead, Umphrey’s or Bisco, but at the same time, it’s where the live songs I love best are born. The studio is where they get to experiment with the whole schabang, where they get to relax and let their creative energy flow, while stockpiling the extra for the upcoming live events.
I’m already thinking ahead. What will they do different this time? What music could they add to their repertoire of funk, dance, jazz, electronic, and hip-hop? Knowing the band, I’m sure we will be toughly impressed.

Hey Dave Moser,
You!!! ahhh,

Its just so we do not get sued.
Congrats!
Hell Yeah I just seen STS9 live for the first time in my life on 9-5-2008 and then again on the 6th, And it was the best 2 days of my life. I feel you on the Outer space thing to Eric. Cant wait to see them again at the end of the year, and cant wait to go to Rothberry. ^_^
I could not agree with you more caleb! I saw them at Vegoose and loved every single second of it. I felt like I was in outer space with these guys and it was a really awesome set! I have a live recording of it if anyone is interested. At the show they had this guy painting a new piece while they were jamming. Most awesomeness indeed.
cant wait to hear this…ive never really listened to any of their studio albums though, just music i downloaded, alot of it ended up being live, i saw them in 07 and it was phenomenal.
