Listen: Kites

You and I in the Kaleidoscope, is the musical project three years in the making for Jean-Philip Grobler. The New York music mind, who more commonly goes by Kites, will finally release the EP on April 29.

Vocally, a mix between a rougher sounding Rufus Wainwright and Muse frontman Matt Bellamy, Grobler’s voice personifies the passion and steadfastness of a musician possessed for perfection, but who also doesn’t try to do too much. Musically is where he shines however, incorporating the electricity and fury of My Bloody Valentine with the delicacy, yet powerful nature of Coldplay. “Daylight,” the EP’s initial track starts simply with an acoustic guitar only to explode 90 seconds in with a burst of electricity. It’s eeirly reminicsent to “Do I Dissapoint You” off Wainwright’s latest album, Release the Stars, only fuller and bigger in sound and energy.

“Easy Now” offers much of the same type of characteristics with a U2 “Vertigo”-esque begining transitioning into a louder mid-section. However, the slower, acoustic ballad “Game of Love and War” and instances throughout each of the You and I in the Kaleidoscope’s four track where Grobler deviates in sound, like his LCD Soundsystem-like vocal track half-way through in “Easy Now” allows the sound to stay fresh.

While at points Grobler might try too much to create that “blow you away” sound, overall, he has created a piece of work that any young musician aspires to one day create. It’s the result of three years of grind, perstitance, and determination. Thankfully for Kites, those three years led to something great.
