Rolling Stone chooses “The Best of Rock”
In this month’s issue of the Rolling Stone, the music meets pop culture meets politics magazine selected the 125+ “People, Places and Things Ruling the Rock Universe in 2008.” Several of this year’s selections made there way online, giving us a glimpse of who really is, who the Rolling Stone believes are the current players in the world of rock.
Here are some of the highlights accompanied by lackluster commentary…
- Best Breakthrough: My Morning Jacket - The Kentucky natives receive the honors after only 10 years into their existence.

- Best Festival Band: Radiohead - It was between either them or Jack Johnson, but then again, does anyone really like Mr. Mellow?
- Best MC: Lil Wayne - Poor Kanye…
- Best Album Cover Designer: Brian Roettinger - No love for Trevor Brown after whole Crystal Castles debacle?
- Best Producer: Danger Mouse - What hasn’t Brian Burton done recently? He released a new Gnarls Barkley ablum, collaborated with Beck, and helped out the Black Keys. And that is only the begining…
- Best Reunion: Led Zeppelin - No brainer considering the number of articles and blog posts pertaining to a reunion tour that never happened are probably astronomical.
- Best Songwriter: Conor Oberst - In today’s music world, it is probably always going to come down to Oberst and Adams. And Adams hasn’t been doing himself any favors lately to help his case.
- Best Festival: Bonnaroo - Even after the most recent additions?
- Best Scene: Baltimore - As someone who grew up in the Washington, DC metropolitan area, I have no comment for this one.
- Best Rock Movie: U2 3D - Is anyone really surprised?
- Best Live Band: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band - Thank you!

baltimore!? fucking baltimore! Hell yeah!
I’m still one of the few to find MMJ highly overrated. I think Rolling Stone has something for them, considering Jim James is in every issue just about.
Zeppelin was obvious, but The Police, to me, seemed to be a more interesting reunion, mainly because none of them had worked together all at once in years… longer than Zeppelin.
I agree with the Led Zeppelin thing
