Watch: Mudcrutch - “The Story”
Before Tom Petty, Benmont Tench, and Mike Campbell got into the business of breaking hearts, there was Mudcrutch, a band they played in with Tom Leadon (brother of Bernie Leadon from the Eagles) and Randall Marsh. Long story short: they went to LA in the early 70s looking for a record deal that never came. The band parted ways, three eventually becoming multi-platinum rock stars and the other two ending up as footnotes in the Tom Petty story.
Next week, we will finally get our hands on Mudcrutch’s debut album, nearly forty years after the fact. It’s an intriguing story on multiple levels. On one hand, Tom Petty is back with another batch of songs and covers only a few years after it seemed he was headed towards early retirement. On the other hand, we have the story of old friends finally coming together to record the album they were always meant to make. It seems we all come out winners.
Here is an official video from Warner Bros. Records in anticipation of next week’s release.
Mudcrutch - “The Story”

Wow…never heard of them. I saw TP and the HB about 13 years ago for the Wildflowers album (great record, by the way) and they put on a great show. Did an extended guitar solo during “Mary Jane’s Last Dance” that blew me away.
I’ll definitely be listening to Mudcrutch…some of it sounds like it’s from “Spinal Tap”’s earlier incarnations.
I’ll be reviewing this album next week, Goob, so I’ll let you know what I think. Just one man’s opinion, but that’s how it goes.
