Prince played Coachella

Prince played Coachella

In what was one of the most anticipated sets of any festival this summer, Prince took the stage in Indio, California last night to headline night #2 of Coachella.

And from all accounts, the show lived up to the hype. Though begining some 25 minutes late, Prince performed well past the festival’s 12 a.m. curfew with a set featuring the likes of “1999”, a cover of Radiohead’s “Creep” and a collaboration with Shelia E. on “Glamorous Life”.

“Coachella, I am here.” Prince hit the stage at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival with that announcement, heralding his arrival as the much-anticipated headliner of the summer festival…

And just as trepidation was beginning to take hold in the crowd that Prince might actually leave without playing “Purple Rain,” he returned to confirm that even in the desert, it could rain purple. Even after the encore, though, he came back for more. “They’re telling me that we got to go, but I can’t leave!” Prince shouted. He then flew through a torrid version of “Let’s Go Crazy.”

Prince had widely been considered the one act most all concertgoers — a diverse 60,000 of indie rockers, electronica dancers and pop fans — were certain to see. And by the end of “Let’s Go Crazy,” Prince had seemed to put his stamp on Coachella lore. “From now on, this is Prince’s house,” he shouted before triumphantly strutting off stage and tossing his guitar 30 feet behind him.

The star-studded crowd watching Prince’s set from the packed VIP area included a veritable motley crue of celebrities including David Hasselhoff, Melanie Griffith, Steven Tyler, Sienna Miller, Scott Speedman, Jared Leto and a host of other Hollywood types.

Also spotted during the show were The Cribs’ Ryan Jarman and Kate Nash, who played a show earlier today, and Jamie Reynolds of Klaxons, who was wandering around in a suit following his performance with Mark Ronson.

  2. Damn, I don’t think I have ever heard of a Coachella act going past 1.

I watched the Portishead set on AT&T, I’m not even a fan, but I was blown away. It was beautiful, and then follow that by prince playing till 1 in the morning?

Last night was a night that is going to go down in Coachella History.

  3. Good catch. He played past 1 a.m. The curfew is “technically” 12.

  4. MAN that would have been kick ass to see…
