Butthole Surfers to tour
Here’s news that will make our staff writer, Jay Ziegler, happy. This summer the kings of audio, the same “dudes” that stretched the limits of what the genre alternative could
handle are going on a short stint, which includes some United Kingdom dates. The Butthole Surfers, that is.
For these shows, Jeff Pinkus will be on bass and Teresa Taylor (along with King Coffey) on drums. This is the rhythm section the band had for most of the 80s and marks the first time this line up has played together since 1989. Paul Leary has prior commitments and unfortunately can’t play the European dates (he will be on stage for the New York City show and possibly more stateside).
Judging on ol’ photos and various bootlegs, the Butthole Surfers were once the “wild n’ crazy guys” of the music industry. I’m talking insane, sick to your gut kind of wild. This is the band who’s lead singer would crossdress on stage, flash the audience, break packets of fake blood, and toss out pictures of burning cockroaches to gross out those in the front row. Gibby Haynes is a god in the underworld of crude, alternative rock. Let’s hope the years and aging haven’t changed a thing.
