Death Cab top chart, Postal Service probably won’t

Hot off their take over of Stereogum yesterday, Ben Gibbard and the rest of Death Cab for Cutie have secured the number one spot on the Billboard 200 chart. Narrow Stairs, the band’s seventh studio album took home the honors after selling 144,000 copies, some 50,000 more than 2005’s Plans did, allowing the Seattle band to beat out the likes of Madonna and Jason Mraz.

But as Death Cab fans are celebrating, supporters of Gibbard’s other project can’t be too happy about the comments the Postal Service frontman made today to the Rolling Stone regarding the future of UPS’ favorite band.

Though beatmaker Jimmy Tamborello recently sent him five new demos to work on, Gibbard says that between Narrow Stairs and Tamborello’s various projects — DNTEL, Figurine — the pair hasn’t had time to focus on making the follow-up to 2003’s Give Up. “The second Postal Service album is threatening to become the Chinese Democracy of indie rock,” Gibbard tells Rolling Stone. “It will come out eventually, or maybe it won’t.”

I guess the time is limited when you’re riding around in a cab all day…
