Of Montreal readies new album
Kevin Barnes has been busy working on a new album, which explains why we haven’t heard much from Of Montreal recently. Well, that was until today, thanks to Barnes’ proclamation, via the always appropriate Myspace blog posting, that he has finished the band’s follow up to 2007’s Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer?
i’ve finished the new album. i’ve been working on it for over a year. it’s mastered and ready to go.
it won’t come out till october though. i am very happy with it. i worry that some people are going to misunderstand it. there’s nothing i can do about that though, now, it is done. anyways,i didn’t create it to give people something to like. i created it because i was compelled to.
The album, which will be entitled Skeletal Lamping and be released via Polyvinyl Records, will apparently be very catchy, yet also quite unpredictable. “Some of the transitions are intentionally awkward. I did this to keep the listener off guard and to dismantle people’s perception of how an album is supposed to be constructed,” Barnes went on to explain in the posting, all in hopes of representing his self-described perpetual state of confusion, “I wanted to make a record that could truly surprise a listener. To create something that was, in turns, enraging, joyous, discomforting, playful, lovely ,unpleasant, freaky, mesmeric…something that came close to capturing the labyrinthine complexity of this human consciousness.”
No word on the tracklist, but based on the speculation appearing on Wiki, it looks “Softcore”, “Jasmin’s Car,” and “Mingusings”, all songs previously performed live, could all make an apperance.
