In other Lollapalooza news, you also may have noticed that Santogold can no longer be found on this year’s Lollapalooza - appparently replaced by the likes of Free Sol. So who is this Free Sol,
you ask?
“Free Sol” refers to a state of mind…a freedom of expression…with a main objective of never conforming to the usual way of doing things. Especially in music. Growing up in Memphis, Free was influenced by a variety of sounds from blues to rock to hip-hop. And unlike many of his peers, he was attracted to all of these sounds and more. He knew at the age of 14 that music would be his life’s work. So after years of ‘sol’ searching in order to find his path, he decided the best idea was to move beyond the basic hip-hop formula of “2 turntables and a microphone” and form an actual band. In 2002, Free Sol was re-born.
With the help of some uniquely talented musicians (Kickman Teddy, Premo Danger, and Elliott Ives), Free Sol created an eclectic and original sound, blending elements of hip-hop, rock, funk, jazz, and soul. His range in talents was quickly recognized, and soon Free found himself sharing the stage with the likes of Justin Timberlake, Isaac Hayes, T.I., Digital Underground, Talib Kweli, Marc Broussard, Erykah Badu, and the Foo Fighters, just to name a few.
Recently, Justin Timberlake recognized Free’s progressive and unique star qualities and signed he and the band to his upstart label, Tennman Records. As the awareness of his music grows, so will the desire to categorize it into a specific genre. But if you truly understand Free Sol, you will simply just call it music.
