Festival Outlook (Part XV)

Festival Outlook (Part XV)

With another major festival now in the books, its time to start gearing up for some of the summer’s later events, highlight of course by Lollapalooza (and its recently revealed schedule) and Austin City Limits.

In an effort to recap all the latest goings on in the world of U.S. music festivals and catch the Bonnarooers up on all of last week’s news, how about another edition of Consequence of Sound’s Festival Outlook?

This weekend, the second annual Popped! Music Festival will go down in lovely Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Headlined by the likes of Vampire Weekend, Mates of State, and Gogol Bordello, the lineup recently saw the addition of a DJ stage, which will feature Mike Z (Sorted!), Rock Tits, and Immediate vs. Turnaround. Hot off his outstanding coverage at Bonnaroo, our own Matt Friedman will be attending the two-day festival to provide our readership with reviews and interviews from the festivities.

Des Moines’ 80/35 festival recently unveiled its completed lineup, though still no word on whether the inaugural edition of the event will go down after the recent flooding that has wreaked havoc on Iowa.

Baltimore’s Whartscape Festival, set to go down between July 17 and 20, also has revealed its 2008 lineup in the last week. Headlined by Dan Deacon, Beach House, and Gregg Gillis (of Girl Talk), the Wham City produced festival is composed largely of local artists.

Just today, the Siren Music Festival added two new acts to its previously announced lineup. Joining Stephen Malkmus, Broken Social Scene, and The Helio Sequence at the Vilage Voice curated free Brooklyn festival will be New York’s own Ra Ra Riot and Islands.

Seattle’s Capital Hill Block Party also recently saw several additions to its lineup as Fleet Foxes, The Cave Singers, and Jaguar Love are among the eight new act now scheduled to perform. The festival also has unveiled its day-by-day lineup.

As you surely know by now, Lollapalooza officially announced its 2008 schedule yesterday. Aside from a few conflicts, it generally is what we expected with Radiohead playing unopposed on Friday, Wilco and Rage Against the Machine holding down Saturday, and Kanye West and Nine Inch Nails closing out Sunday. In addition to the schedule, the Chicago festival also listed a list of official aftershows and replaced Santogold with Free Sol.

Unlike its sister festival, Austin City Limits has yet to provide a list of its official after shows, though that hasn’t stopped potential festivalgoers’ speculation. The Austin festival also recently added the Fratellis to its 2008 lineup.

Still no official word on this year’s version of the Detour Festival, though according to LA Weekly, the Los Angeles, California event will go down on October 4. Weezer, Robyn, and Jarvis Cocker continue to be the hot rumors, at least on our end, but again, nothing has been confirmed.

What is official however, is Street Scene 2008, thanks to a Monday announcement which saw the unveiling of this year’s lineup. Headed by Beck, the Black Crowes, and the National, the festival also promises a solid collection of mid-tiers bands thanks to scheduled performances by Hot Chip, Vampire Weekend, Eagles of Death Metal, and Man Man.

We’re still awaiting news on a few fall festivals, including the newly moved Bang! Music Festival and Atlanta’s Echo Project. The full lineup for the 2008 edition of the Voodoo Music Experience, set to go down in late November, should also come in the coming weeks.
