Girl Talk vs. Axl Rose: Who did you choose?
Who knew Thursday could be such a hot bed for new music?
But after yesterday’s apparent leak of Guns N’ Roses’ long-awaited Chinese Democracy and the midnight release of Girl Talk’s Feed The Animals, music fans suddenly find themselves overwhelmed by new music.
By now, most of us had time to consume both Axl’s nine songs/masters/demos (whatever you want to call them) and Gregg Gillis inane collection of 300+ samples that somehow came together to form 14 overly catchy mashups. So, who did you go with?
Sure, comparing the two releases is like comparing apples and oranges. After all, Chinese Democracy technically isn’t even out yet - and may never be, while Girl Talk is giving away Feed The Animals ala Radiohead. Guns N’ Roses excel at guitar solos and the sounds of raw, rock n’ roll, while Girl Talk relies on song fusion and technology to produce his creations. Still, regardless of the release format or styles, its still fun to compare, or at the very least, look how the two albums are being accepted one day later by the collective music masses.
Since hitting the web yesterday evening, the nine new demos “supposedly” from Chinese Democracy have caused sheer chaos in the music world. And while the implications pertaining to the release of the album now fifteen years in the making are as interesting as the music itself, since nothing has been confirmed, most have still chosen to deny reality, at least for the time being, and imagine that Gun N’ Roses’ sixth studio album has indeed fallen into their laps. The response? Our own Matt Roffman appears to be in heaven, deeming it “great”, while Antiquiet, the original origin of the leak, calls it “well worth the wait”. On the other hand, Stereogum declared it “underwhelming”. So what’s the final verdict? We’ll let you decide for yourself - all you have to do is get your hands on those files.
Unlike Axl, Gregg Gillis appears to be a much easier man to please. After all, Feed The Animals, the mashup DJ’s fourth full-length album, took less than two years to come about. What’s more, the genius behind Girl Talk also appears to actually like the finished product - “Gillis has created his most heavy-hitting, party-centric album yet,” declared the press release.
In fact, so much so, that Gillis is confident enough to take the much debated “pay what you want route” for Feed The Animals. All prospective listeners have to do in order to hear the fury of mashups featuring everyone from Kanye to Radiohead, is head over to IllegalArt.com. Once there, you’ll be met with…

Simply type in the amount - and you’re almost done…

A whole lot simpler than finding all those hidden links and combating the annoying pop ups present on the file hosting sites, eh?
Still in the end, both albums can technically be had for free. And regardless of the styles or the ways to acquire them, I’d suggest checking out both. Both are not only good, they’re damn entertaining. Whether you’re a fan of history or catchiness, both albums will quench your music thirst - at least until the next high-profile leak.

axl rocks and you people suck girl talk is some but head band that everyone hates like me so yea i hate you girl talk
I’ll put myself in the Girl Talk bin, and here’s why…
as we are above debating the techniques of sampling and mash-ups, we are also above reiterating Axl’s continuous neglect to produce a fair forgery of GNR.
My reason for choosing Girl Talk is one part nostalgia (Ace of Base, Jackson 5, Dexy’s Midnight Runners, etc.) and one part phenomenal creativity in his pairings (Jay Z vs. The Police…you have to respect the irony here). Axl Rose just sounds like he took Use Your Illusion vocals and ran them through a meat grinder with every generic nu-metal band from the mid to late 90s.
Sorry Axl, but I guess the anagram of your name being Oral Sex was not unintended after all - you suck.
even though i’ve never been a big fan of girl talk or mashups, i quite like this new album on a first listen. there’s some pretty wild stuff on there, like odb vs ace of base, and it sounds a lot more calculated and less spastic than night ripper.
More importantly, Girl Talk can take 2 songs you don’t like and turn it into the most fun I have ever had, both with albums(new one included) and the 5 live shows of his I have seen in the last year. His energy level is SO high, and his mashes are so catchy and hilarious. I feel that we should be above having to debate the validity of sampling by now. The most awesome dance party ever might not be fun for you, but I can’t get enough.
Mashups are possibly the lamest musical movement ever. It’s like, “wow, you can take two songs I don’t like, and make them into one horrible song”. So I’ll go with GNR, even though they aren’t relevant.
