Jay-Z plays Glastonbury, makes Oasis look really stupid
The most unique and controversial headliner of recent memory took the stage at Glastonbury last night, and by night’s end, likely left an impression among the 135,000+ attendees for his musicianship and well, humor, rather than his contrasting, non-traditional “Glastonbury guitar style”.
After months of debate whether he “fit the mold” of the U.K. festival, fueled even more recently by some rather smug comments from Oasis’ Noel Gallagher, Jay-Z performed his response - a 25-song Saturday night headlining set.
But before he kicked off his performance, the New Yorker hip-hop star paid a little tribute to Gallagher and company…
The response, you ask? Read for yourself.
Of course, you could just watch the whole thing…

I don’t see how the crowd singing Wonderwall makes Oasis look stupid. The only embarrassing things here are the slow Glastonbury ticket sales and Jigga’s poor vocals on the track.
Jay-Z basically gave Oasis a giant “F you”. And I don’t think you can judge the vocals for that song - it wasn’t performed for its musicality.
Yeah, I get what he was going for. But leading everyone is a sing along(unless thousands were singing every word to a song ironically) isn’t much of a put down. Battle rap isn’t what it used to be.
I think the whole thing was meant to be ironic…why else would he have done it? If the fans singing-a-long didn’t realize this, well, that’s there problem.
Awesome…
The slow ticket sales were an embarrassment - for the racist indie idiots who couldn’t countenance a rapper headlining. And it sold out in the end anyway, so I don’t think Michael Eavis has too much to worry about.
Despite Drew’s apparent inferiority complex, no one is judging Jay-Z’s fit for the festival on race, but rather on style. In the event that Bloc Party become big enough to headline a night, no one will reference or even notice the racial make-up of the band. Noel’s logic (which I understand but don’t necessarily agree with) is that hip-hop is not right for the headliner spot. The same way that other huge acts (perhaps a Phish reunion, or Jimmy Buffet) may draw but you will alienate and drive away your core base of fans. The only way to judge Noel’s comments is on ticket sales, which were indeed slower.
True, but in the end, they did sell it out.
The more I think about it, I don’t really see how he dogged Oasis. In the context of things, maybe. But it’s not really anything “in your face” and certainly not a snub, so much.
It almost comes off as a homage, sort of like how Raconteurs did “Crazy” in 2006.
Michael…
I think the whole beauty of this was that it wasn’t an “in your face” dis. Jay-Z could have gotten into the whole pissing battle with Noel months ago and instead he decided not to worry about it. He went out there at Glastonbury and opened up with “Wonderwall” just to say, “I heard you. Here I am.”
And I definitely think it is a bit of an homage. Jay didn’t come off mockingly at all. It’s almost as if he was making a statement of rising above the petty mudslinging. “You don’t think I belong here. Whatever. I’m not getting into it with you but I still think you write good songs so here it is.”
Still…It’s hard to look past the fact that he segued into “I got 99 problems but a bitch ain’t one.”
