Festival Outlook (Part XVI)
Since we last talked, more than a few upcoming Northern American music festivals have been made an appearance on our Festival Outlook. But between CoS’ recent downtime and the sheer magnitude in the number of both lineup announcements and lineup additions, we figured it might be a good time to catch everyone, including ourselves, up.
It’s hard to believe that it’s already July. In fact, just yesterday I remember posting about the whole Prince and Coachella sage. But as blisteringly hot as these summer months can be, they also mean that a number of our favorite festivals are fast approaching.
T
he folks behind Wham City, which include the always fun Dan Deacon, are busy gearing up for the third annual edition of the Whartscape Music Festival. Set to take place between July 17 and 20 at various venues throughout the city of Baltimore, Maryland, the recently announced full lineup is again heavy in local flavor. Among the other notables joining Deacon will be Gregg Gillis (Girl Talk), Parts and Labor, Black Dice, Beach House, Oxes, a “very special guest”.
After the cancellation of scheduled headliner Method Man, the seventh annual Forecastle Music Festival is left trying to come up with a replacement on short notice. After all, the Louisville, Kentucky festival is scheduled to take place at the end of this month - July 25-27 to be exact. Their latest attempt? The additions of GZA and Del the Funky Homosapien.
As we mentioned yesterday, the ninth annual moe. curated moe. down will go down later at the end of August in Turin, New York. Scheduled to join the jam band for this year’s edition include the Levon Helm Band, Abigial Wasburn & the Sparrow Quartet, and the Presidents of the United States. Oh, and did we mention the whole thing takes place at a ski resort? Talk about fun times…
While we were offline last week, the 2008 lineup for Musicfest Northwest was revealed. The Portland, Oregon music festival (doesn’t it seem like the west coast gets everything good?) is currently scheduled to go down during the first weekend of September. Vampire Weekend and TV on the Radio are billed as headliners, while Mogwai, Del the Funkey Homosapien, and Nada Surf make up some of the more fan favorite acts currently billed to be taking part.
The Pygmalion Music Festival, an event that still seems very much under the rader, has also recently added a number of names to its lineup. Replacing the recently canceled Shearwater and The War on Dugs at the Illinois festival, set to take place between September 17 and 20, will be The M’s, Murder By Death, Dr. Manhattan, and a number of other bands you’ll likely be hearing more about in the coming months and years. Persoanlly, I consider this festival Pitchfork 2.0.
Another high-profile music festival is ATP New York. Among the newly added names selected by My Bloody Valentine for the Catskills, New York festival include Bob Mould, Les Savy Fav, and Bardo Pond. As if the lineup weren’t good enough already, now Les Savy Fav will be performing? Someone shoot me…

In addition to the aforementioned festival, the weekend of September 19-21 will also serve as home for San Diego’s 24th annual Street Scene. Though the initial lineup was announced just a few short weeks ago, there have already been two additions - GZA and Diplo.
Though details remain sketchy, a third music festival will also go down that third weekend of September as Madison, Wisconsin will serve as home to the Forward Music Festival. Among the names making up the lineup’s first wave are Neko Case, Bob Mould, Dan Deacon (isn’t he everywhere?), and Dillinger F
our.
A lineup for a late fall Florida music festival was recently released. Only it wasn’t the one we were all expecting. The Bear Creek Music & Arts Festival, not the Bang! Music Festival, has unveiled the names scheduled to take part in its 2008 edition edition, which as of now, include Ivan Neville’s Dumpstaphunk, Soulive, Perpetual Groove, The New Mastersounds.
Speaking of Bang!, the news remains unchanged. A higher music experience, coming in 2008.
New for the 2008 edition of The Eho Project also remains very much nonexistent, though there are several big rumors pertaining to its future. A few folks over at Inforoo have gotten in touch with the organizers of the Atlanta festival and it now appears as if Echo will take place not this year, but next year, during memorial day weekend. Of course, we’ll keep you updated…
And finally, lets not forget about our friends up north. Aside from the recent inclusion of the B Live stage for the Toronto edition of the Virgin Mobile Festival, folks in Canada were also recently greeted to the 2008 lineup for the Rifflandia Festival. Set to take place between August 29 and 31 in Victoria, British Columbia, the festival will play host to among other Black Mountain, DJ Z-Trip, Final Fantasy, and Man Man.
That’s all for now. Until next time, enjoy your summer full of music!
