CoCa Fans: Neverender is Here!

CoCa Fans: Neverender is Here!

Coheed & Cambria have found some mainstream success, partially due to commercial-friendly singles (e.g., “Feathers” and “The Suffering”) and partially thanks to Harmonix (EA) showcasing their track “Welcome Home” in the blockbuster video game “Rock Band” (the same song is now the theme song in the commercial for the game, as well as for the cable channel Versus). Yet, the New York band remains primarily a cult band. The fanbase of Coheed has grown exponentially over the past couple of years and, with all of the interesting facets of the music, it is easy to see that their popularity will only increase.

Last week, the Coheed & Cambria website presented a cryptic message, causing a wide-range of speculation among the fans about what the band was up to. The homepage featured a design of a dragonfly hovering over a city with the text “Neverender is Coming!” This was intriguing for a few reasons. “Neverender” is a song off of the band’s first album, The Second Stage Turbine Blade. Did the message refer to the song? Maybe the band is planning a Second Stage tour? The guesses were endless.

However, due to the complexity of the band and its music, the puzzle seemed far more complicated. Coheed’s albums detail a complex science fiction story (”The Amory Wars”) that front-man Claudio Sanchez put into comic book form a couple of years ago. Could the message be related to the comics?

Clearly, the music and story would translate well over to an animated feature. Personally, I’ve long thought that Coheed should develop a visual component to screen at the live shows. Imagine a large screen above the stage with the story flowing perfectly with the set. As you might imagine, the prospect of a movie caused quite a stir this week. In addition, the band has released two live DVDs and one live album, so it would not have shocked anyone if the surprise was a new live album/DVD. Other fan ideas included a new book, describing the storyline in detail.

On Wednesday afternoon, Coheed revealed the surprise and it was not at all a letdown. In fact, I believe unique and hyped events such as this, only further establishes Coheed & Cambria as a modern, iconic rock band. The following was posted on the band’s site:

Well, they certainly know how to get their fans excited! Now, of course, we still have many questions left unanswered. Will they play four shows in each city? Will it be one ticket for all shows or separate admission? If they are charging each night separately, are they going to tell the fans which night they are going to play each album beforehand? Hopefully, all of these questions will be answered on Monday. Until then, I’m sure the fans will have fun trying to figure it all out!
