Update: David Byrne will plays songs of, but NOT WITH Brian Eno
As we began to figure out shortly after posting about it last night and eluded too earlier today, it turns out all that hoopla surrounding a David Byrne tour with Brian Eno was all for nothing. While the former Talking Heads’ frontman will indeed be touring this fall, he will not be accompanied by Eno at any of the currently announced stops.
The prospects of a Byrne/Eno tour didn’t seem to far fetched, considering the duo is indeed currently collaborating on a new studio album. So when Billboard.com published a story last night reporting that the collaboration would also be making its way on to stage as well, which include Byrne’s scheduled Friday appearance at Austin City Limits, several sites, including CoS, jumped for joy while furiously typing up the details as fast as possible.
However, shortly after posting, some smart commenters over at Brooklyn Vegan pointed that Eno has stated numerous times, as recently as April, that he will not be any touring with David Byrne. Shortly there after, we got word from The Daily Swarm who had also heard Eno would not be taking part.
Eventually, Billboard.com printed a retraction to their original story, officially confirming what everyone basically figured out.
Although one of the three announced shows still touts Eno’s participation with the billing “The Songs of Talking Heads’ David Byrne and Roxy Music founder Brian Eno,” Byrne’s publicist confirms Eno is not involved in the outing.
In the end, it looks as if the wording of Byrne’s tour - “Songs of David Byrne and Brian Eno” - was the culprit behind the confusion. It’s hard to fault anyone on this one, my head is still spinning.
We now know that David Byrne will be performing songs of the Byrne/Eno Talking Heads era. Only it won’t be with Brian Eno. I repeat. It won’t be with Brian Eno.
Sigh.
