Russia to ban emo??

Russia to ban emo??

Could the world’s largest country (in terms of landmass) be taking a step towards banning emo music? According to reports from NME, the Russian legislature is taking serious precautions to regulate emo websites and ban goth & emo themed clothes from school grounds:

The new laws are apparently being driven by fears that these “dangerous teen trends” encourage depression and suicide.

Of course, with every story and joke, there is a punchline. The article also goes on to point out both actions from both sides of the coin:

The legislation was presented last month at a hearing held by the State Durma, where critics claimed that the “negative” emo culture encourages anti-social behaviour and glorifies suicide.

Emo kids were described as teenagers who wear black, have facial piercings and black hair with fringes that “cover half the face”, reports The Guardian

The weekend saw mass protests by Russian emo kids.

In Krasnoyarsk, Siberia, where laws are already being implemented, protestors in a march held signs saying “A Totalitarian State Encourages Stupidity”.

The Russian legislature seems to be following protocol in the vein of the events that took place in the UK just a few months ago with the death of 13 year old English My Chemical Romance fan, Hannah Bond.

What does the future behold for emo music? It could fade away, but from the looks of things, it seems to be putting up a big fight. We’ll just have to wait for the outcome.

  1. Its sad when people blame a certain musical genre for violence amongst teens and neglect to look into the home life. It has always been easy to use music as a scape-goat, but at the end of the day there is always a deeper issue.

  2. Oh please. Everyone knows that RAP music is what makes people violent.

  3. I think it was country music, all along. All this talk about shootings wives and getting drunk. Perhaps country music makes adults into alcoholics and every kid who listens to classical music will suddenly become deaf and create masterworks of so-called art.

I dislike emo music, but don’t use it as a scapegoat - look into the parenting and home life.

Find out what your teenage son/daughter is doing and be a fucking role model instead of using the “do as I say, not as I do” method - that just teaches them to do what you’re doing…

    …shirking your responsibilities!

  4. I usually hate those damn borscht eating commies, but I think they might be onto something.

  5. Personally, I find that film soundtracks from the year 2005 make people violent.

  6. Personally, Lawrence Welk kinda makes me wanna mosh

  7. just ban the emo not the goths. Goths contributed a lot of things in terms of art such as paintings, architecture and music. While emo just contributes suicidal notes and suicide victims! I must agree, emo glorifies suicide and most of their victims are minors (teenagares) who are in their puberty stage when they can’t comprehend with their feeling and easy to be part of a subculture that only produce mass killings.

Expressing my opinion on this, you can never blame the government, because music has a major role in every one of us, a country where you can easily listen and download music from the net, radio and tv station.. it has a great influence especially to those children. I’m goth but I agree they ban the emo, it’s not because I hate them, it’s the lyrics and unsenseless suicidal thing. A child in puberty age, he/she can be easily carried away to this kind of song.

  9. Wow. I disagree wholeheartedly. And I don’t like emo.

  10. this is senceorship its only a style

  11. government… they think they know us better than we do, when in reality, they know probably 30% or less of what it’s really like to live as a normal citizen without any of those ridiculous privileges. it makes me sick. ah, well. what’s next, they implant chips into your brain, run by a sattelite, and every time you think depressing or bad thoughts you get an electric shock? sounds like a book i read once…

  12. and by the way, just to be clear, emo does NOT endorse suicidal thoughts, or even depression for that matter. My Chemical Romance is not emo. that’s got to be the lamest joke i’ve ever heard of. they are just an alternative rock band.

  13. if anybody has a problem with what i just said, id be happy for you to message me at myspace.com/_these_walls_ and prove to you that i am right. kids are doing whatever the hell they want these days. just because a few of them dress a certain way and have a certain taste in music, doesn’t mean they’re just a bunch of drones. the reason they’re all protesting is for the fashion side of it. i don’t see what gives anyone else the right to tell you how to dress. it seems most have forgotten that humans are all just another species living on planet earth. those people are living in a state of grandeur, and it is really annoying. it’s like dictating to someone that they’re not allowed to put a freaking ribbon on their dog because it might cause all the other dogs to be more sexually attracted to it, and god forbid we ever be sexually attractive, or have sex for that matter. how insane does that sound to you?

  14. I’m missing the relation between emo and dog sex.

  15. how DARE they bring my chemical romance into this!! they save lives! they dont destroy them!! Emo and goth are a way of life! they shouldnt be worrieing about them the should be worrying about gangs and killers and raipests not us!!! LEAVE MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE OUT OF THIS DANGIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!
