Byrne and Eno’s big plans

Byrne and Eno’s big plans

Big plans, people! Big plans! While David Byrne and Brian Eno confirmed long ago that they were collaborating and working on a new record, its only today we find out on what and when. Well, the cats out of the bag (as they say, right?) and soon enough you’ll be able to hear new Byrne/Eno influenced sounds. Pretty soon, actually! In fact, starting next week!

In a very revealing post on his new website, everythingthathappens.com, David Byrne laid out his schedule for the remainder of the year. Titled Everything That Happens Will Happen Today, the new record is a 27 year follow up to their 1981 album, My Life in the Bush of Ghosts.

In August the music will be available via this Web site, free for streaming and it will also be available for purchase as both a download and in physical formats. One of the songs will be available free of charge. In September I will begin a tour, on which I will be playing music from the new album as well as music from our previous collaborations - 3 Talking Heads albums, Bush of Ghosts, etc.

Also on the website, you can sign up for e-mail updates regarding the future tour and album. Considering the long wait, an e-mail is a kind gesture on their part. And if that’s not enough to whet your appetite, then perhaps some more details regarding the new release will hold you over some. We can’t appease anyone these days, huh?

Everything That Happens focuses on Byrne’s lyrics and vocals over Eno’s electronic tracks; a press release emphasizes that the album is “more a collection of songs” than the soundscapes of My Life in the Bush of Ghosts. Eno elaborated on Byrne’s aforementioned “electronic gospel” comment in the press release: “When we started this work, we started to think we were making something like electronic gospel: a music where singing was the central event but whose sonic landscapes were not the type normally associated with that way of singing.”

Now that the storm’s over, the aftermath is looking good. New record? Check. New tour? Check. Smiling fans? Check. If Byrne’s tour history is any indication, these upcoming shows will be absolutely fabulous. One can’t help but be excited for the new record and with Lollapalooza this weekend, one week isn’t too hard of a wait. Time to re-watch True Stories again and freshen up on that ‘81 album. Oh, and to start saving some money for tickets.

Hmm, maybe The Who not coming to Chicago is a good thing after all?
