Interview: Sam Champion
During last month’s Popped! Festival, we had an opportunity to sit down with the members of the Brooklyn-based quartet, Sam Champion. Chatting for a good twenty minutes, we discussed a wide range of topics, everything from the formation of the band and origin of their name. As you will hear, the group explains how various influences and the addition of key members over the years contributed to the development of the sound featured on the new album that not only offers the cool sounds of Pavement-like lo fi and the twang rock of Beck, but also mixes in driving bass lines and powerful guitar solos.
Heavenly Benders (September 2 via North Street Records) also represents the four-piece outfit’s shift towards a heavy “do it yourself” attitude. As a result, our conversation morphed from a Q&A to an engaging discussion on the current state of the music industry.
After recently being featured by Rolling Stone and playing in support of the Cold War Kids at New York’s Prospect Park, Sam Champion appear poised for big things to come. Check out our full discussion below…
