Interview: Okkervil River

Interview: Okkervil River

An hour before his band took the Playstation 3 stage for what proved to be one of Saturday’s more memorable performances, Okkervil River frontman/founding member Will Sheff took a few minutes to discuss a variety of topics with myself and Alex Young.

Compared to the on-stage version of Sheff, a man who offered incredible enthusiasm and passion to the thousands that gathered to see Okkervil’s performance, behind the scenes, the 32-year-old, Austin rocker is much more subdued and down-to-earth, and like many Lolla attendees, he even had trouble putting on the three-day wristband.

Throughout our 12 minute interview, Sheff exhibited incredible grace and sincerity, willing to answer each and every one of our questions, from his inspiration and influences to his view on the state of the record industry, with full and colorful disclosure.

  1. Just listened to Okkervil’s whole discography today. I love that Sheff sounds like the least pretentious person on Earth. Best lyricist today in my opinion. Can’t wait for the concert! Great interview.

  2. Thank you for posting the interview with Will Sheff…correction, however, Will is not an Austin native. He is originally from New Hampshire and moved to Austin circa 1998. He lives in Brooklyn, NY now when not on tour, but refers to himself as an Austinite in spirit…we’ll take it!

    Thanks,

  3. [...] get ‘em. Okay, let’s cut the bullshit, huh? Okkervil River’s brainchild, Will Sheff, is up to his neck in projects. You know, as if touring Europe isn’t enough for one person, [...]
