Lolla Live: Sunday afternoon

Lolla Live: Sunday afternoon

Today, the third and final day of Lollapalooza 2008 brings a  completely different vibe than what was seen as attendees poured ono Columbus Avenue at the conclusion of yesterday’s festivies. The vibe for the most part, is much more mellow, a product of the the more garage rock oriented sounds filling the scorchingly hot morning sky.

Austin based natives What Made Milwaukee Famous helped kick the day off with an early afternoon performance on the Citi Stage. The five-piece outfit showed an impressive amount of energy considering the time of day, though their rather confused sound limited the quality of the set. Regardless, the band should prove to be an interesting interviewee when we visit them in a few minutes.

The garage mixed grunge of The Whigs provided an equally enthusiastic setting for the folks gathered around the Myspace Stage. While like with MGMT yesterday, the stage’s sound quality was all over the place, the drenched Georgia natives did produce a fury of head-bopping sounds when they decided to jam out.

On the other side of Grant Park, the early morning scene was met with much dissapointment due to the short notice cancellation on The Weakerthans. Chicago based rockers Office were pushed backed to fill the void, but many people, visibally and vocally distraught, choose to explore other avenues rather than stick around.

So far, the afternoon’s most memorable highlight is easily Perry Farrell’s performance at Kidzapalooza. While the set has become standard over the festival’s now four years of existence, this year, Perry was joined by Slash for four songs, which included renditions of “Mountain Song” and “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door”.

As we now find ourselves in the late afternoon portion of the festival, the crowd is for the most part, just waiting for what is to come. G Love and Iron & Wine are among the names currently performing, but most people are more concerned with waiting for the upcoming headline performances by either Kanye West or Nine Inch Nails rather than watching the current live sets. And yes, Trent Reznor and Nine Inch Nails are indeed playing tonight.

Stay tuned for our full recap later this evening/early tomorrow morning.
