Festival Outlook (Part XVII)

Contrary to popular belief, the end of summer doesn’t necessarily mean an end to festival fun. In fact, the months of September and October alone offer nearly 25 major music events that would make any festival junkie’s heart content. In an effort to educate those who may not visit our festival outlook on a regular basis and recap all of the latest on goings in festival news and announcements, we figured the time was right for another post edition of our Festival Outlook.

One of the more talked about festivals in recent weeks has been the Tent State Music Festival to End the War, and for good reason. After all, with a lineup featuring the likes of the Flobots, MC5, The Coup, and Common Market, the Denver, Colorado based event, scheduled to take place between August 24 and 26, was already very much worthwhile, considering…well, it is free. Then, Rage Against the Machine was added and things went from good to outstanding. Of course, if you aren’t against the war, this festival might not be for you…

Another noteworthy free event this fall will be the East Village Radio Music Festival. Taking place just two weeks later (September 6) at the South Street Seaport, the concert will be hosted by KRS-One and will offer such acts as Boris, High Places, and Flying Lotus.

On the Canadian front, fans still have one last version of the Virgin Mobile Festival to take in. The Toronto edition of the Richard Branson founded event already featured a pretty compelling lineup - Foo Fighters, Oasis, Paul Weller, Silversun Pickups, and Against Me! - and that was before the latest additions. In case you haven’t looked, Matt Costa, Electric Touch, and Calgary’s Secret Broacast are the newest names scheduled to take part in the fun.

With confirmed acts like Neko Case, Bob Mould, and Dan Deacon, Madison, Wisconsin’s Forward Music Festival already featured quite the lineup. But with a slew of new additions, including Mason Jennings, Flosstradamus, and Thao with the Get Down Stay Down now scheduled to show up between September 19 and 20, to say our mouths are watering would be an under statement.

By now, surely you’ve seen the list of Austin Ciy Limits’ aftershows. But did you notice a few of the recent lineup changes? For one, the Fleet Foxes have been added to replace Ingrid Michaelson, who dropped out in order to support Jason Marz’s upcoming tour in Europe.

The Roots, Toots and the Maytals, and a Big Ol’ Nasty Getdown featuring Georgile Clinton are just some of the major names you’ll see if you head down to Mills River, North Carolina between October 24 and 26. The Loki Music Festival offers a tremendous lineup of jam and folk friendly name for a $125.50 price. And we haven’t even mentioned the “special guest” headliner yet.

CMJ made headlines last week with the announcement of its initial lineup for the 2008 edition of the Music Marathon. The New York City showcase, scheduled to take place between October 21 and 25, is already offering Crystal Castles, They Might Be Giants, Jay Reatard, and Broken Social Scene. What’s more, there is still time to get in on the discounted rates. Today is a good day to be a New Yorker!

Austin’s Fun Fun Fun Fest will surely be one of the more unique events of the year. After all, the early November music festival is having blogs announce their 2008 lineup? Among the acts currently announced? …And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead, Atmosphere, Minus the Bear, Deerhoof, and DJ Z-Trip just to name a few. Who wants to plan a trip to Texas!?!?

Looking for a few other events? We recommend HARD Haunted Hallooween for Californians, Envol & Macadam Fest for Canadians, and for those down south? The MOTOROKR Fest.

As mentioned before, stay current with all the latest festivals news and rumors, lineups and aftershows, tickets and um…free stuff?, at our Festival Outlook page.

  1. still not a peep from the Bang Festival people… =(

  2. Those CMJ badges are a disaster. They don’t guarantee entry and a lot of the daytime shows are unofficial and don’t take the badges at all. It’s better to wait for the individual shows to go on sale separately.

  3. Sweet mother of music! did you just say Fleet Foxes and ACL in the same sentence?!? I think a tear just ran down the side of my face.

  4. [...] from myspace page to random blog postings to unveil portions of its third annual lineup. While we uncovered quite a few names, its always easier when the day of the official announcement [...]
