Coldplay’s album #5 due out in 2009
Though rumors of a fifth studio album have been circulating even before Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends was actually released, it was hard to fathom the idea of Coldplay willing and/or able to release something something so soon after the success of #4 and the length of what has essentially become a sixth-month world tour.
Regardless, the rumors are still afloat, and in fact, thanks to a report in today’s edition of the Telegraph, are as alive as ever. The British newspaper quotes a source at EMI (the band’s label), who confirms that material for the follow up to Viva La Vida is not only finished, but will indeed see light soon rather than later.
“The Viva La Vida sessions were incredibly fruitful. They gelled brilliantly with Brian and recorded much more music than they could fit on one album.
The majority of the follow-up is already in the can, though they will have to go back into the studio at some point to add a few more songs.”
Logic would tell you that based on the band’s upcoming itinerary (see below), time for a studio session or two won’t be available until the new year. However, with words like “rush” being used, anything is possible, one just hopes quality isn’t sacrificed for quantity.
The Telegraph also points out the added bonus that once #5 is out of the way, Coldplay will officially become free agents, able to take the Radiohead route (ie., give away free stuff) if it so chooses.

“…recorded much more music than they could fit on one album.” Seriously? There’s 10 songs clocking in at about 46 minutes. Pretty sure CD’s can handle a good 30 minutes more than that. Way to justify the double dip, EMI. And if Coldplay is really looking to get out of their contract, just put out a b-sides album and be done with it since that’s essentially what this sounds like it will end up being anyway.

(Vía Consequence of Sound). [...]
