Wilco aims for new record in 2009
Since the release of 2007’s Sky Blue Sky, Wilco has been spending the recent months on the road, spiting time between a full-length North American tour, headlining stints at Lollapalooza and Virgin Mobile Festival, and Saturday Night Live. Oh yeah, and then there is that thing with Neil Young in December.
Showing no signs of road fatigue, Jeff Tweedy and his Wilco mates now have plans that span even beyond the recently announced tour dates with Young. During an interview with Albany’s WAMC radio station, Tweedy revealed that the Chicago outfit is planning to release its seventh studio album sometime in the spring of 2009. What’s more, based on the frontman’s comments, it looks to be a safe bet that the record won’t be anything like the Wilco’s previous six.
Tweedy told WAMC he’s going through a phase where he “kinda hate[s]” all of Wilco’s six prior albums, because “none of them are a statement that I would be comfortable making right now at this point in my life. They all served their purpose, and in that respect I’m proud of all of them.
“But as something that feels artistically in keeping with who I am today, I think that they are inevitably going to fall short of that as time goes on. I mean, they just don’t continue to mean the same things to me, and a new record is kind of where it’s at.”
Instead, Tweedy would like the new album to “allow [the band] a bit more leeway in terms of sculpting the sound in the studio and doing overdubs and using the studio as another instrument.” Wilco recently offered a taste of this new sound during its performance at Lollapalooza.
