Sonic Youth returns to the studio

Between last year’s Trees Outside the Academy and the subsequent tour, Thurston Moore has certainly been keeping himself busy. But with fans of his main outfit looking for a follow up to 2006’s Rather Ripped, it now appears Moore will soon be rejoining his Sonic Youth bandmates for some studio time.

According to Rolling Stone, Moore and Co. will begin work on what will be their first non-major label album since 1988’s Daydream Nation (Rather Ripped marked the end of the Sonic Youth’s obligation to Geffen) in November with a tentative spring release date planned.

“I’ve written a half-dozen song ideas,” [Moore] says. “I try not to complete them so much. Last time we got together, we were creating sort of new band-zone-vibe sort of things.” As for returning to the indie world again, Moore is psyched. “It feels great,” he says. “The last four or five records we did were just so compromised by that [major label] situation. But that’s the way it goes.”

If Rather Ripped is any indication as to the quality of the new album, we are probably in for some pretty good stuff. In the mean time, Moore and Sonic Youth have a strong of upcoming dates to look forward to.
