Watch: Rage takes “Guerrilla Radio” to DNC
Sure, Barack Obama officially accepted his nomination as the Democratic presidential candidate this past week in front of nearly 80,000 endeavoring supports. But did his appearance incite an all out, politically charged circle pit of epic proportions? We think not.
Taking the stage on Wednesday, August 27st as part of the Tent State Music Festival to End the War, just a day before Mr. Obama’s speech and Radiohead’s webcasting, Rage Against the Machine would lead some 8,000 attendees in a non-violent, yet chaotic expression of peace.
More than anything, the concert was a respectful nod to Iraq Veterans Against the War, which, along with Tent State, mounted the show to call attention to their agenda: Encouraging a hasty end to the war, providing veterans with comprehensive healthcare, and rebuilding Iraq.
After the headliners capped off a loud, amped up performance with the fan favorite “Killin in the name,” Rage guitarist Tom Morello called on the roughly 8,000 concertgoers to join him and other entertainers in a march for peace to the Pepsi Center.
“We’re going right now,” he said. “We’ll meet you outside.”
Morello and Co. kicked things off their protest with a rendition of “Guerrilla Radio”. Regardless of preference for the band or political affiliation, one can’t help but be captivated by this compelling example of music’s power of expression.
Rage Against the Machine’s entire performance is available here. Republicans will be able to get their own Rage fix next week. What’s more, Morello will be joining Steve Earle for a Labor Day protest concert in neighboring St. Paul during the convention.
