Watch: Sonic Youth closes out McCarren Pool

This past Saturday marked the final performance at Brooklyn’s ever popular McCarren Park Pool. Beginning next year, the unique venue will again serve as a full-time swimming pool, ending its popular, and often free, summer concert series.

Sonic Youth had the honors of headlining the final show ever at McCarren. Supported by the likes of Vivian Girls, Times New Viking, and Wolf Eyes, the Thurston Moore led grouped performed a 15-song set, deemed by many as a show for the ages. The performance was kicked off by two brand new selections, freshly written and somewhat improvisational.

Moore sang the first song which had riffs akin to The Stooges, but was still tightly bound melodically to their last album, 2006’s Rather Ripped. The second song was executed by a brooding Kim Gordon in a fashion that harkened back to Youth’s early 90’s material. As the song went on, the vocals gradually built up to an ear-splitting finale only to come to a dead stop at the end.

Following a few upcoming solo gigs by Moore, Sonic Youth will return to the studio to begin work on its currently untitled, follow up to 2006’s Rather Ripped.
