Elbow takes home Mercury Prize honors
When it comes to the Mercury Prize, it turns out the second time was the charm for British based rockers Elbow. After being shortlisted in 2001 for Asleep in the Back, but ultimately losing out to PJ Harvey, the five-piece outfit’s latest effort, The Seldom Seen Kid, was chosen as the year’s best and took home the honors of being the 2008 Nationwide Mercury Prize winner earlier this evening.
Beating out 11 other nominees, which included the likes of Radiohead, Burial, and British Sea Power, Burial becomes the 17th group to take home the prestigious U.K based award designed to champion the best album releases of the past 12 months. Elbow will also receive $20,000 in prize money.

“This is quite literally the best thing that’s ever happened to us,” said lead singer Guy Garvey…
“I know I’m supposed to be cool and say something coy, but it’s literally the best thing that’s ever happened to us.”
