Matador Records wins Sonic Youth courtship
As we pointed out last month when word first broke that Sonic Youth would be returning to the studio to begin work on its 16th studio album, the upcoming release, rumored to be titled The Eternal, will mark the first’s release on a label other than Geffen Records since 1988’s Daydream Nation.
While Thurston Moore recently announced his outfit’s plans to take the jump into the lifestyle of indie labelhood to Rolling Stone, the Sonic Youth frontman refused to shed any hints as to which one had earned the band’s heart. Well, that was until today.
So which outfit will have the honor of releasing Sonic Youth’s latest material?
New York based Matador Records.
After rampant speculation, Matador Records can confirm the label will be releasing a new studio album from Sonic Youth sometime in 2009. Having fulfilled their contractual obligations to the Universal Music Group, Sonic Youth recently reached an agreement with Matador to release the band’s 16th album of new material in all worldwide territories, save for Japan…
Sonic Youth will join the fellow indie rockers The New Pornographers, Stephen Malkmus, Cat Power, and Mission of Burma among others on the label’s roster.
The 16th studio album is tentatively scheduled to see release next spring.
