The Who chooses new over covers?

As far back as April, The Who has voiced its plans to release a R&B cover album with producer T Bone Burnett. With the tribute concert and tour announcement that followed, the prospects of the Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey led outfit actually living up to its promise seemed to grow by the day.

Oh, how naive we were.

In a recent interview with Billboard.com, Daltrey revealed that the planned project has not only been put on hold, but has “no status” whatsoever.

“It’s an idea that’s ticking away,” Daltrey says. “It still probably will happen, but I think the smaller the idea is kept, the better. Small and fluid, maybe just something for our Web site.”

The change of intentions appear to be a result of Towshend’s current goings-on, which according to Daltrey, are focused on writing material for a new Who studio effort. While no further details were divulged - “(Townshend) doesn’t like to talk about it” - we know now, at least for the near future, that the only update Who sound we’ll be hearing will come from the live side of things.

But hey, it could be worse?
