New Found Glory signs with Epitaph?
Yes, folks you read the title correctly. New Found Glory, the Florida band who tailed the 90s pop-punk genre, have chosen their “friends” over major labels.
Bit surprised? Not completely, considering they have only sold close to 200,000 records since 2006 (one of which was a greatest hits CD). The crazy thing is that I really used to like them.
Returning to their indie roots? Sounds more like they’ve given up hope. Epitaph - the label who gave The Offspring and Sage Francis their chances - are reigning in these past-punk unhopefuls for another turn on the merry-go-round. Epitaph might have more money than they used to, but at this rate NFG will be about as useful as a compilation CD from TVT.
Mark Hoppus is slated to produce the MCA semi-vets’ next effort (that was the guy from Blink-182, right?). Honestly, I truly respect Hoppus and his former bandmates for adding a mightier sense of mischief and mayhem to pop-punk. One is not inclined, however to believe this kid can revive the machine.
As per Billboard.com:
“Epitaph is the place to be!,” enthuses guitarist Chad Gilbert. “They were all longtime, true fans of New Found Glory and they understand us. We aren’t just some record to put out before the new Pussycat Dolls CD! We were over the big business of the majors.”
What is sadder than crumbling to corporate expectations? Going back to square one and calling it a sincere return to form. More embarassing than Dryden Mitchell’s reverse mohawk back in the late 90s. In case you’re interested, however New Found Glory is currently touring North America.
