Could it be? A new Gorillaz album?
The world’s most compelling, yet confusing musical outfit appears ready for a return. After captivating ears and minds for much of the early part of the decade, the virtual music project of Blur frontman Damon Albarn and comic book artist Jamie Hewlett, better known as Gorillaz will reportedly make a comeback later this year with the release of a band new studio album.
While the duo is currently occupied with its latest endeavor, Monkey: Journey to the West, an opera based stage adaption of a classic Chinese novel, Albarn and Hewlett did recently share some rather interesting comments to CBCNews concerning their future plans.
Q: What’s next for you?
DA: We’re doing another Gorillaz record. We came back from summer holidays and realized we could do exactly what we wanted to do with Gorillaz. Essentially, Jamie just had to agree to draw the characters again. ’Cause I just do what I do anyway.
JH: I’m so f—ing bored of drawing those characters. But then we had a moment where we had a new angle on it.
DA: Well, you won’t be bored of drawing them again.
JH: I’m gonna adapt them.
While few specifics were shared, perhaps because the duo doesn’t even know what’s in store, “we’re not entirely certain; we generally just go with our gut. I dunno. We are obtuse and quite abstract, really,” Hewlett went on to say, the two did indeed confirm that the Gorillaz’s third full-length studio album has been green lighted by “the record company.”
Until then, Albarn and Hewlett recently dropped the soundtrack to Monkey: Journey to the West to hold you over.
Now only if we could get Albarn to do some more The Good, the Bad and the Queen and then we’d be talking…
