Barackrock.org offers music for donations
It’s no secret that most in the music world will be pulling the lever for Democratic Presidential candidate Barack Obama this November. After all, each new day seems to bring news of another pro-Obama support stint - The National, The Breeders, and Jim James are the latest acts to get on in the fun - or musicial composition. But Sam Champion’s Jack Dolgen is taking it to a whole new level.
With the help of designer Andrew Ackermann, the New York-based bassist has launched BarackRock.org, an online campaign that will use the power of music to “bring people from around the world togethe
r under one banner and channel their energy into a unified force.” To do so, Dolgen is offering some pretty impressive new material from a few well-known indie favorites for the price of a donation to Barack Obama’s campaign.
BarackRock.org started with one song and a desire for change. It has grown into a movement of musicians and artists creating an ever-expanding catalogue of free, exclusive songs, each with its own individual art, meant to inspire participation and donations for the Obama Campaign. These are unreleased tracks and demos, only available here and now, so plug in your headphones and make a difference!
Sam Champion, Via Audio, and Sono Oto are just a few of the artists already taking part with additional material from Jens Lekman, Northern State, and Antibalas promised to be on the way.
But Dolgen isn’t the only musician using the internet to drum up support for Obama. Members from Lightning Bolt and Foot Village recently teamed up to launch Noise for Obama, while Deerhoof’s Gary Saunier, the Mighty Mighty Bosstones’ Dicky Barrett, and Rilo Kiley’s Pierre de Reeder make up the impressive collection of names who have taken part in Largehearted Boy’s Why Obama essay series.
