Caribou awarded Polaris Prize

Caribou awarded Polaris Prize

Last night was Canada’s turn to reward its favorite hometown music of 2008 with the announcement of the third annual Polaris Music Prize recipient. Like the Mercury Prize earlier this month, there were plenty of superb acts to choose from - The Weakerthans, Plants and Animals, and Holy Fuck just to name a few, but by night’s end, the honors went home to Daniel Snaith and the electronic styles of his personal project, Caribou.

The Ontario native was rewarded $20,000 and the honor of joining Final Fantasy (2006) and Patrick Watson) in the Polaris winner circle of fame for his 2007 effort, Andorra, which exemplifies the best of “artistic merit” in Canada’s ever popular music scene. Not bad for a project named after a LSD trip, eh?

Unassuming is certainly the word for Snaith, who was nearly literally speechless upon winning the award. “If I seem completely overwhelmed I apologise,” he said. “It’s because I totally am.” Asked what he was going to do with the money, he disappointed the gathered journos on deadline by saying to check back with him in a few days once he had given it serious thought.
